THE 2023 HARVEST HAS BEEN SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED DESPITE CLIMATIC CHALLENGES
At Viña Emiliana, the 2023 harvest ended with success despite the climatic challenges present during this season. According to the report provided by the agricultural area and the winemaking team, all the grapes that reached a perfect ripeness were picked on time.
Andrés Aparicio, the winery’s Agricultural Manager, highlighted the importance of organic and biodynamic agriculture, pointing out the resilience of the vineyards when facing climate change.“Years of practicing this type of agriculture have allowed us to increase the levels of organic matter in the soils, improving their capacity to retain water, allowing them to better withstand periods of high temperatures,” he said.
Noelia Orts, the winemaker at Emiliana, underlined the quality of the fruit in this harvest: “As for reds, -even though they are still very young- we perceive a high intensity of fresh and crisp fruit. And on the palate a fine balance of tannins, acidity and fruit concentration. White varieties unfold delicate fruity and flowery aromas, as well as very fresh and vibrant natural acidities.”
The 2022-2023 season showed remarkable climatic differences compared to previous years. Winter was beneficial regarding precipitations, and spring started with cool temperatures and frosts at the beginning of October. However, during summer, the temperatures rose significantly, affecting the growth of the bunches and speeding up the ripeness of the grapes, a condition that impacted the whole Chilean wine sector.
Fortunately for Emiliana, the regenerative organic and biodynamic agricultural practices were of great help in lowering the temperatures around the area of the bunches, causing a slower ripening of the grapes and reducing the impact of high temperatures.
