BIODYNAMIC AGRICULTURE

“Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.”

Albert Einstein

THE PRINCIPLES OF BIODYNAMIC AGRICULTURE

Biodynamic agriculture maintains a holistic, ecological, and ethical approach to agriculture that looks to heal the planet through regenerative agriculture. It considers the vineyard as a single organism that includes the plants, animals, and people, all working with the vital energies of nature, and not just the material.

01

The field is considered a living, integrative, and complete organism. This organism is composed of many interdependent elements: forests, plants, animals, soils, people, and the spirit of the place. Biodynamic farmers work to nourish and harmonize these elements, administering them in a holistic and dynamic sense to support the health and vitality of it all.

02

Biodynamic agriculture cultivates biodiversity and a unique originality in each field. Annual and perennial cultivations, herbs, flowers, fruits, and native plants, among others, contribute to the vegetative diversity, broadening the health and resilience of the place. The diversity of domestic animals is also beneficial, as each animal species has a different relationship with the land and a unique quality to its manure.

03

Biodynamic agriculture brings together the plants, animals, and soil through living and conscious relationships, where each supports the other to achieve balance for everyone. In fields where this interaction doesn’t exist, imbalances are created, like a nutrient deficiency (when only plants are grown), or contamination due to an excess of manure (where only animals are raised).

04

The biodynamic plants grow in living soils, which provide a quality of health and nutrition that isn’t possible with chemical fertilizers. Biodynamic agriculture aspires to generate this health through compost, integrating the animals, cover crops, and crop rotation.

05

Biodynamic compost comes alive through the use of six preparations made from yarrow flowers, chamomile, stinging nettle, oak bark, dandelion, and valerian. Each one of these medicinal plants is transformed thanks to a unique process that helps connect it to the animal kingdom, the Earth, and the cycles of the year. The process of combining these elements helps enhance the healing qualities and foment the growth of fungi and beneficial bacteria.

06

In addition to the preparations added to the compost, other preparations are used to propitiate the health and vitality of the plant and the field. The cow manure enhances the life in the soil and the relationship between the soil and the plant. Silica increases the immunity of the plant, strengthens photosynthesis, and promotes the fruit’s ripening. Horsetail tea prevents fungal diseases and balances the water element in the plants and soil.

07

Biodynamic agriculture works with the rhythms of the Earth and cosmos. The biodynamic calendars support this connection and understanding, providing detailed astronomical information with respect to the optimal times for seeding, transplanting, growing, harvesting, and using biodynamic preparations.

08

Biodynamic agriculture focuses on creating the conditions for optimal soil, plant, and animal health, generating balanced nutrition and healthy immune systems. When fields incorporate a robust variety of plants and animals, creating habitats for natural predators, pests and diseases have little or no place to prosper.

09

Biodynamic agriculture offers regenerative solutions for the future as it’s a conscious, participative, and responsible form of cultivating the soil and existing in the world. It brings healing to the soil, plants, animals, people, and planet. Each unique and sustainable field generously contributes to enhancing the vitality of the ecology and economy, in addition to the social and spiritual aspect of the community that surrounds it, and the Earth itself, which is a living being.
